It is harder to join the fight while I carry Felicity. I manage to get my mate to the fringe of the battle. The farm Grens frantically try to keep our offense from destroying the farm. The fires toss thick black smoke into the afternoon sky.

Our fighters push forward with heavy blows. The hunters were obviously more battle-tested, but nothing compares to angry captives getting their chance to get in a few hits. I watch as a couple of human women arm themselves with rakes and shovels and any farm equipment they can find. Our Grens are getting some damage, but the humans are overwhelming their captors. The thuds and calls of aggression are tangibly thick. The efficiency impresses me. I don’t have much experience with military matters. However, I would gladly go into a traditional battle with these humans.

The battle is over in a grueling slog. The bodies are unidentifiable. The mounds of flesh stud the ground. As the smoke clears, our death toll is simply a single Gren. He rests in the arms of a sympathetic human. I approach the gasping soldier. Felicity stares down at the Gren.

“Is there someone we need to notify?” she asks gently.

The Gren tries to answer, but his voice fails him. He takes a shaky breath, and the human holding him lowers her head to hear his answer. She listens to his second attempt. Her bloody face looks up at me.

“He says the name is Jacqueline MacDonald,” she says. .

The Gren in her arms nods in agreement. Felicity nods in return.

Azin pushes past us and settles next to the dying soldier. He speaks our native language to comfort him. I recognize the words of encouragement.

“You have done well, warrior,” he says.

The dying’s body language reacts to the language change.

“We will notify your mate, brother.”

“Open the door for the Good Death. Rest in knowing that your light is fading under caring eyes. Your name will be remembered. Your life will be shared. Rest now and know we will meet again.”

I haven’t heard the last rites that we use to send our Grengorian dead on since my mother’s passing. My eyes tear up at Azin’s gentle tone. We are not waiting long for the Gren to die. The human stands when he is gone. Azin lifts the body and heaves it over his shoulder.

“I will deliver his body back to his family,” he announces.

Two more Gren in our party are wounded. To my surprise, the human refugees begin helping them move forward in our escape. I feel a swell of respect as the humans and Gren move together.

Azin confiscates an SUV from the huge machine shed on the property. Many able-bodied Gren and humans mount ATVs and zoom down the gravel drive to the road.

The vehicles that brought us here set collecting rust behind the nearby brush. Some Gren go back to retrieve the old heaps. Azin respectfully lays our fallen comrade in the back of the SUV.

The wounded pair off with the driver of their choice.
